"Essays on the history of Jewish (Yiddish) folk music": about the new book by M. Ya. Beregovsky
The book, published by the Muzyka publishing house, is based on the essay "Essays on the History of Jewish (Yiddish) Folk Music" by the outstanding researcher of Jewish music, Moses Beregovsky. The scientist stopped working on it in 1946; the draft was preserved in his archive, transferred to the Manuscript Room of the Russian Institute of Art History. The book includes the original Yiddish text, its translation into Russian with comments, as well as articles devoted to the analysis of the essay itself and the history of the Beregovsky archive. The Appendix contains melodies from the first recorded collection of songs in Yiddish (1727), the description of which ends the manuscript. The audience will get acquainted with Beregovsky's extraordinary methodological ideas, which have not lost their relevance to the present, and also learn what problems translators and publishers faced when preparing the book.
