In memoriam
The Music in Culture project preserves and develops the scientific tradition of the State Institute of Art Studies, formerly the All—Union Scientific Research Institute of Art Studies (1976-1992). The interdisciplinary nature of the Institute's activities has conditioned its role as a scientific center for the study of world art and created the prerequisites for the formation of a unique community and the appearance of fundamental works on Russian and foreign music.
The scientific principles laid down by B.V. Asafyev (1884-1949), Yu.V. Keldysh (1907-1995), M.E. Tarakanov (1928-1996), M.G. Aranovsky (1928-2009) and others allowed, despite the geopolitical fractures of the twentieth century, to preserve the function of the institute as a leading scientific center for Asian musical studies, which has been carried out and is still being conducted on the basis of the foundation of pre-revolutionary Russian and Soviet Oriental studies (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Tashkent, Baku, Yerevan, Tbilisi), taking into account the advanced achievements of humanitarian science.
