Safi al-Din al-Urmawi and sufiyana kalam

The report examines the mode-compositional features of the Kashmiri musical genre sufiyana kalam in the context of modern conceptualization (Fr. Wright, G.B. Shamilli) theories of the outstanding musicologist of the 13th century Safi al-Din al-Urmawi and his treatise Adwar "Circles". A comparative analysis of the fret systems has shown that despite the two contrasting forms of theory development — oral (Sufiyana kalam) and written (Tractate Advar "Circles") — both are subject to logic, allowing them to outline the points of intersection. On this basis, it is suggested that the music of Sufiyan kalam can serve as an example of the practical implementation of the theoretical principles of al-Urmawi, adapted in this regional spiritual musical and poetic environment. Special attention is paid to such concepts as: "ҳal" (spiritual state), "pakat" (melodic grain) and "asl – far" (base – branch).
