Thought on Music in the Abrahamic Traditions-2017

What is the understanding of music in various cultures around the world, united by the term Abrahamic traditions, and do the shared ethical and aesthetic values of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam influence the process of its conceptualization? Participants in this international interdisciplinary conference addressed a wide range of issues related to the study of methods for systematizing musical knowledge in close interaction with the performance practices of Abrahamic traditions. For the first time in global academic practice, this conference brought together specialists studying musical concepts using various sources—from ancient and medieval treatises on music to religious and theological literature. Our goal was to identify the differences in the language of music description and the different meanings attached to the same terms, strictly dependent on the literary genre canon, as well as to understand the reason for the absence of a generic concept of "music" in many ancient and modern cultures of Western and Central Asia.
